About St. Henry II
St. Henry II was born in 973 in Bavaria, Germany, into a noble and devout family. He became Duke of Bavaria, and eventually Holy Roman Emperor in the year 1014. Though a powerful ruler, Henry remained deeply committed to the Catholic faith and used his position to promote the Church’s mission.
Along with his holy wife, St. Cunegunda, he supported the building of churches, monasteries, and schools, and he was a protector of the pope and the reforming spirit within the Church. Henry was known for his humility, justice, and deep piety. Despite his high status, he lived a life of prayer and penance, and remained childless, offering his family and kingdom to God’s providence.
He died in 1024 and was canonized by Pope Eugene III in 1146.
Prayer:
St. Henry, holy ruler and humble servant of God, guide today’s leaders to act with justice and faith. Help us, too, to use our gifts in service of Christ and His Church. Amen.
