About St. John Gualbert

St. John Gualbert was born into a noble family in Florence, Italy, in the late 10th century. As a young man, he was consumed with the desire for vengeance after his brother was murdered. But on Good Friday, John encountered his brother’s killer. As he raised his sword to strike, the man fell to his knees and begged for mercy in the name of Christ. Moved by the power of the Cross, John forgave him—and his life was forever changed.

He renounced his wealth and joined a Benedictine monastery. Later, seeking a more austere and reformed way of monastic life, he founded the Vallombrosan Order, dedicated to prayer, poverty, and reform of the Church. His life of humility, holiness, and defense of ecclesial integrity earned him sainthood.

Short Prayer:

St. John Gualbert, who chose mercy over vengeance and gave your life to Christ in prayer and humility, intercede for us that we may also forgive, love deeply, and live faithfully. Amen.
