Saint of the Day: St. Irenaeus of Lyons

Feast Day: June 28
Title: Bishop and Martyr
Patron of: Against heresy, Church unity

Short Biography:

St. Irenaeus (c. c.130–202 AD) was born in Smyrna (modern İzmir, Turkey) and was a disciple of St. Polycarp, who in turn had known the Apostles. Around 177 AD, Irenaeus was sent to Gaul (modern France) to combat the spread of Gnostic heresies. Appointed Bishop of Lyons, he defended the Church’s faith with clarity and charity, most notably in his monumental work Against Heresies, which systematically refuted heretical teachings and affirmed the truth passed down by the Apostles. He emphasized the importance of Scripture united with Apostolic Tradition and underscored the primacy of the Roman See for preserving doctrinal unity. He suffered persecution for Christ and died peacefully around 202 AD, leaving a legacy as one of the early Church’s great theologians and champions of orthodoxy.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, through the intercession of St. Irenaeus, help us to hold fast to the apostolic faith, to resist all errors, and to live in unity with Your Church. Grant us courage to defend the truth in charity, that we may grow in wisdom and grace. Amen.
