Choosing a Catholic Bible<\/strong> is mostly about (1) ecclesial approval<\/strong>, (2) faithful content<\/strong>, and (3) right purpose<\/strong> (liturgy vs. study\/devotion). Here are practical criteria you can use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Check that it is truly \u201cCatholic\u201d (not just Christian)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Look for ecclesiastical approval<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A Catholic Bible should be produced\/issued in communion with the Church and, in the Catholic tradition, is commonly offered\u00a0with \u201cecclesiastical Imprimatur\u201d and suitable explanatory notes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Use a translation intended for Catholics\u2019 prayer and pastoral life<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Church encourages access to Scripture through translations prepared by experts, describing that Catholic translations can provide \u201ca solid basis for the prayer and pastoral activity of all Christ\u2019s followers.\u201d
Pope Leo XIV likewise emphasizes that translations remain indispensable for encounter with God, and he encourages frequent reading of the Bible (e.g., lectio divina).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Make sure the Old Testament is the Catholic one<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A \u201cCatholic Bible\u201d must include the books the Catholic Church receives as canonical<\/strong> (the so-called deuterocanonical books). Many Protestant Bibles exclude some of these; if your edition has the smaller Protestant Old Testament, it\u2019s not the Catholic Bible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For study, catechesis, and lectio divina: choose a solid Catholic edition<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For personal prayer and study, you generally have more freedom, but still want Catholic reliability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
