The word\u00a0<em>adopted<\/em>\u00a0is here used to point out the fact that there are certain elements in canon law borrowed by the\u00a0Church\u00a0from\u00a0civil law\u00a0or from the writings of private\u00a0individuals, who as such had no authority in\u00a0ecclesiastical\u00a0society.
